Deerfield was known as Le Clair until 1850 when one of the original settlers, John Millen, suggested the name Deerfield after his hometown in Massachusetts. Fellow residents approved the name in honor of the deer abounding in the area.
The first school in the village was founded and named by the Wilmot family in 1947. Originally a one-room schoolhouse, it was replaced by what is now called Wilmot Elementary. The Deerfield Historic Society has preserved a one-room schoolhouse in the style of the original Wilmot School for families to visit.
